The College Alternative or Supplement

     The other day I had the honor of being asked to do a motivational talk and be on the advisory board at Minuteman Tech. My Cosmetology teacher, who is now the head of the department, contacted me because I am one of their “success stories”. My “success” was helped immensely by the education and preparation that I had at Minuteman Tech and I accepted the position without hesitation.
      A lot of parents are convinced especially in this highly competitive community that college is the only option for students after high school. They are sorely mistaken. Don’t get me wrong I am a firm believer that knowledge is power and I tell my son that every day when I drop him off at school. But some parents don’t see that their child is incredibly creative and has a passion for something that may not require a degree. And isn’t an example of being successful is doing something that you love to do?
      Yes, I know we are the parents. Yes, I know we know what’s best. But let’s be realistic; one day these children will be a young man or woman working at a computer or in a lab a realize that “Hey, what am I doing here? This is not my passion!” So I beg of you parents, listen to your kids and nurture that direction that they want to go in. A school like Minuteman Tech is a wonderful opportunity to let them grow, be creative and help them on their career path. Not all of our children are going to want to be doctors and teachers; some may actually want to be (gasp! The horror!) business people and entrepreneurs. I am grateful to have a family that supported my career decisions.
      I look back at the years I spent at Minuteman with great fondness and satisfaction. I am thrilled to find out that they are proud of me, because I sure am proud of them.

Not Just Another Blog Post

Recently I’ve found that in this day and age of information right now at your fingertips, people are getting their knowledge from not just articles but from blogs. Considering whatever article you are reading is just as much biased according to the direction of the particular publication as it is accurate. So in that case, people are taking control and choosing the obviously opinionated version of whatever current event they are following and reading a (most likely) condensed version to suit one’s on-the-go lifestyle.

But like all forms of media and communication, there is (gasp) evolution. Whether it is for the better, I don’t know. Blogs are now become to much work for the busy human and now they have discovered the latest interpretaion of communication: the Vlog (video blog) This is kind of like the book on tape for blogs. They take that blog to the next level by adding a visual element such as for tours, travel sites, and bringing you closer to the… author/host?

Welcome to the wonderful world of the online service industry! I forgot how I first discovered the fact that I can learn how to do just about ANYTHING simply by punching the keywords into the search engine and BOOM- I’ve become an expert at something. I think it may have started off with wanting to learn a makeup technique, maybe it was how to grill salmon, or was it how to properly tie my karate belt? (I like to think of myself as well-rounded). There are even tutorials on how to use YouTube (how-tos for the how-tos). The possibilities are endless! But then I look up from my computer (from what has felt like hours because it is now dark in here) and realize some services or classes such as, yoga/personal training, cooking or even photography, can take place in the comfort and privacy of our own homes for FREE! (uh oh)

Fortunately for people in my line of work, we cannot be replaced by computers …right? Well, just remember this: Nothing beats that face to face, one-on-one service of any small local business. I’ve Made The Big Time!

Well, it’s official: I’ve made it Ma… I got my first bad review! Hopefully, this will be the only. But I’m afraid that the longer that I’m in business, there may be more and as my very wise sister said, “You can’t please everybody.”

Let me just start off by saying it is ALL COMPLETELY UNTRUE! Without going into detail, I know for a fact that we did everything we could and always do for a wonderful service and experience. I think it was a matter of someone (reviewer) just having a bad day even before they walked into my humble establishment. I decided to make this a learning experience…I decided to make lemonade…

The first thing I did was read the many good reviews and take delight in the number of positive responses. When I was done patting myself on the back, I met with my staff to share this disturbing discovery and re-evaluate (Those who are close to me say I “over think” things and “obsess”- silly, huh?). This input will motivate us to perfect the details involved in excellent customer service. Now we can move on.

For the reviewer: Maybe you were having a bad day, maybe there is just no pleasing you or maybe you were having an “imbalance”. I just want to let you know that I am a single mother who grew up having to work instead of going to college with the dream of being a great success and to comfortably provide for my family. I am a consumer as well, and have had less than perfect service at some businesses. When this happens, I take into consideration that this is someone’s livelihood and a bad review is bad for business. I will just never patronize that establishment again and that business will not be at the top of my recommendation list. Of course all bets are off if you directly insult me or my family (It’s the Sicilian in me) or you physically assault me (duh?).

So my advice for other small businesses is to not ignore these comments, they are from our customers – the actual people we provide service to. Think of these situations as opportunities to grow and re-focus. Then move on.
